FileLocker FAQs

Overview:

With Filelocker, Valencia College users can immediately share files with anyone inside or outside the College using this simple system. It is an ideal solution when files are too large to send through traditional email. Recipients receive email notification of files being available and follow links to download them. If you have a question about Filelocker, start with the Filelocker FAQ below.

What is Filelocker?

It is a secure, temporary storage space used for exchanging files with people inside and outside of the University.

How do I access Filelocker?

Visit https://filelocker.valenciacollege.edu/login and log in with your credentials. Note that this is NOT your Atlas credentials.  Request access to FileLocker here.

After logging in, you will see the My Files screen. From this screen, you can:

  • Upload a file to share with one or more individuals.

  • Manage Groups of users with whom you wish to periodically share files.

  • Delete an existing file by clicking the check box to its left and then clicking the Delete button.

  • Request Upload of files to your account from anyone at any email address.

Is Filelocker appropriate for long-term storage of files?

No. Filelocker is intended to provide a temporary, secure place in which files can be uploaded and held for recipients to download and store outside of the system. Files are automatically expunged from Filelocker after a default period of time, or sooner depending on user-selected options.

How much space do Filelocker accounts have?

A total of one gigabyte (1,024 megabytes) is available.

What is the largest file size that can be uploaded?

The system can accept uploads up to the size of the space available in an account. If an account has no other items in it, a file of up to one gigabyte (1,024 megabytes) in size may be uploaded.

Note: Due to differences in the architecture of various file systems, reported file sizes may differ slightly.

Can people outside of Valencia College send me files?

Yes. By logging into Filelocker and using the Request Upload feature, you can invite anyone at any email address to send you a file.

What is the easiest way to share a group of files?

While Filelocker doesn't natively provide a way to share multiple uploaded files in a single action, there is an efficient way to do so. Creating a zip file on your computer containing the desired group of files allows for the following:

  • Numerous files can be uploaded at once and are stored as a single item in your account.
  • Recipients can receive a single email message and need only go through the download process once.
  • Zipping can potentially compress/reduce file sizes, which makes for shorter upload and download times as well as more efficient use of account space.

What sort of security does Filelocker have?

Filelocker uses AES-256 encryption. There are also options to password-protect public access aspects, select expiry of files upon initial download or set expiry date to occur sooner than the default seven-day period.

A file I shared is providing less than seven days of access.

Regardless fo when a file is shared, it will be available for a maximum of seven days from when it was initially uploaded. If you uploaded the file previously, sharing it will only provide access for the balance of its specified time on the server.

Sometimes the Browse & Upload button seems to be unresponsive.

This is a known issue. In some cases, clicking your browser reload button and trying again helps; at other times, you may need to log out and then log back in.
