Create a Passkey with Microsoft Authenticator

A passkey is a digital key securely stored on your phone, computer, or another device. When you sign in, your device uses that key to prove to the website that it’s really you. You confirm the sign-in with Face ID, a fingerprint, or your device PIN. The actual key never gets shared with the website, making account access more secure and resistant to phishing.


Before You Begin:
1) Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone or tablet.


2) Device minimum requirement:
Android: Android 15 (Check: Settings > About Phone > Software information)
iPhone/iPad: iOS 17 (Check: Settings > General > About)


3) Your computer must have Bluetooth Enabled for passkey to work with it.
Laptops usually have bluetooth, however, desktops must be verified for compatibility.


Step 1: Access your Security Info


Step 2: Add a Passkey
  1. Click "Add sign-in method"
  2. Click "Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator"
  3. Click "Next" once
  4. On your phone: Open the Microsoft Authenticator app
  5. Select your Valencia College account
  6. Select "Create a passkey"
  7. Tap "Sign in"
  8. If prompted to choose a password manager:
    1. Tap "Save another way"
    2. Select/Enable Microsoft Authenticator
    3. Save the Passkey to the Microsoft Authenticator
  9. Return to the Security Info page: click "Next"
  10. Click "Done"


Step 3: How to use Passkey
When logging into your account, you will see a new prompt:

  1. Click "iPhone, iPad, or Android device"
  2. You will see a QR code

  3. On your phone, open the camera, then point it at the QR code
  4. Your phone will read the QR code, Tap the prompted link
  5. Select Microsoft Authenticator and sign into it



Troubleshooting

Error: Your device doesn't support passkeys in the app

Check the version of Android or iOS your device is using.

Device minimum requirement:
 Android: Android 15 (Check: Settings > About Phone > Software information)
 iPhone/iPad: iOS 17 (Check: Settings > General > About)

• See previous, above error.
• Revisit Step 2, 3 - Only press "Next" once. Then proceed to the next step.
