Policy Statement:

 

  1. The District Board of Trustees authorizes the president to offer scholarships as authorized by law and by State Board of Education Rules. The president or his designee may determine the number and amounts of scholarships or partial scholarships to be granted, provided that the category, number and dollar amounts do not exceed the funds available or the requirements established by law. The amount of scholarship funds shall be included in the operating budget of the College and designated in the loan and scholarship account.

     

  2. Operating procedures for the selection and payment of scholarships shall be developed and administered by the Director of Financial Aid.

 

Procedures:

  1. Valencia Scholarships are funded through the Financial Aid Fee assessed to each course credit and are administered according to the provisions of Section 240.35 (6), F.S. A report of revenue collected and expenditures by category must be filed annually with the Division of Florida Colleges.

  2. The president or his designee may determine the number and amounts of scholarships or partial scholarships to be granted, provided that the number and dollar amounts do not exceed the funds available and meet the statutory requirements. The amount of scholarship funds shall be included in the operating budget of the College and designated in the loan and scholarship account.

  3. The following scholarships have been established. Additional scholarships may be created by the president or his designee in order to meet the needs of students.

    All scholarships shall be administered by the Director of Financial Aid.

    1. PRESIDENT'S ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP

      1. Academic scholarships will be available on a competitive basis to students who meet Honors Program course placement requirements based on college designated CPT, ACT, or SAT assessment scores. These scholarships will be awarded for a maximum of two academic years. To be eligible for consideration, the following minimum criteria must be met and maintained:

        1. Submit a Scholarship Application, a Valencia Admission Application, and an Honors Program application no later than July 15 for the upcoming academic year. (See appendix 06-16A).

        2. Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so that processed results are available by July 15 for the upcoming academic year.

        3. Present assessment scores (less than two-years old) from any of the following placement exams that meet the stated minimums by July 15 for the upcoming academic year.

          1. CPT: Sentence Skills (W) 83, Reading Skills (R) 83,

            Elementary Algebra (A) 90 and College-Level Math (I) 50; or

          2. Sentence Skills (W) 100, Reading Skills (R) 97, Elementary Algebra (A) 72

          3. SAT: 1170

          4. ACT: Composite 26

        4. Provide official high school or prior college transcripts to Valencia’s Admissions and Records Department no later than July 15 for the upcoming academic year.

        5. Enroll at Valencia for a minimum of nine (9) credit hours in an AA or AS degree program in both fall and spring terms. At least one course each term must be an Honors Program course. College Preparatory courses will not be funded nor count as part of the minimum credit hours.

      2. The award and the amount of this scholarship shall be determined by the availability of funds. Scholarships may be renewed for a second year to recipients who complete at least 9 credit hours each term and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

    2. HONORS SCHOLARSHIPS

      1. These scholarships are open to students who have been accepted into the Honors Program and have met all Honors Program enrollment criteria. Selection will be made by the Honors Program Director.

      2. To be eligible and maintain eligibility, the following criteria must be met and maintained:

        1. Be seeking an Honors Degree and actively participating in Honors Program activities

        2. Submit an Honors Program Scholarship application by July 15 for the upcoming academic year.

           

        3. Submit a Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) prior to receiving funding

        4. Enroll for and complete a minimum of nine (9) credit hours per term of funding

        5. Complete 100 percent of the course work attempted

        6. Maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA

        7. Take a minimum of nine (9) hours of honors courses per academic year

    3. VALENCIA ADVANTAGE SCHOLARSHIP

      1. Valencia Advantage Scholarship recipients are selected by Financial Aid Services based on the following criteria.

        1. Submit a Scholarship Application and a Valencia Admission Application. Priority will be given to applications received by July 15 for the upcoming academic year. (See appendix 06-16B)

        2. Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Processed results must show the applicant to have unmet financial need.

        3. Seek an AA, AAS or AS Degree Program

        4. Selection priority shall be for students who do not qualify for any other source of grant or scholarship funding.

        5. Scholarship amounts will vary based on the student’s demonstrated financial need.

        6. To receive funding, the recipient must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements for Financial Aid Recipients as described in the Valencia Catalog and enroll in at least 6 credit hours each term

    4. PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

      1. Scholarships will be available to students engaged in performing arts activities including, but not limited to, art, drama, and music.

      2. The department dean or program coordinator will forward selection recommendations to the Director of Financial Aid Services for final approval and awarding. Recipients must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to receiving funding.

    5. BRIDGES TO SUCCESS

      1. This scholarship is awarded to students who participate in the Bridges to Success Program. The Bridges to Success Program is available to disadvantaged high school graduates from Orange or Osceola county high schools. Special consideration is given to students who have participated in one of Valencia College’s pre-collegiate programs: College Reach Out Program (CROP), Dual Enrollment, Partnership Program, Pathways Into Nursing Program (PIN), Tech Prep or Upward Bound and enrolled at Valencia the summer following high school.

      2. The scholarship will pay for in-state tuition and fees, plus up to $300 per semester for required books and supplies.

      3. Initial Eligibility:

        1. Apply and be accepted into the Bridges to Success program.

        2. Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so that results are received prior to the start of classes.

        3. Meet Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid recipients.

        4. Seek an AA, AAS or AS Degree Program

        5. Enroll in at least 6 credit hours during the first summer term after high school.

      4. Renewal Eligibility:

        1. Scholarship is renewed on a term by term basis

        2. Active participation in Bridges to Success activities and the recommendation of the program Director will be required

        3. Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so that results are received prior to the start of classes each year

        4. Enroll in at least 9 credit hours each term

        5. Maintain a 2.5 GPA

        6. Complete at least 75% of attempted courses

    6. VALENCIA GRANT

This grant is awarded by the Director of Financial Aid Services to provide direct educational expenses for students with unusual financial circumstances based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and other documentation on file.
